WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY EASTER

My Dear friends in Christ and people of God,

A very Happy Easter to you all!

The Early Christian’s gathered from the Evening of Saturday  to the dawn of Sunday to get ready for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the Easter Vigil  we gather in our respective Parishes for a shorter period, but the purpose is the same: To share in Jesus’ Resurrection. As we gather around a large Fire representing the divine life of Jesus which was not destroyed on the Cross:-You see a Large Candle, called Pascal Candle. We shall light this candle from the Big fire and from this Pascal Candle we shall light our small candles.

At Baptism Jesus shares with us His own very life in Spirit. For all Christian’s this is the day that the Lord has won Triumph over and come alive to save us. He defeated death: Risen from the dead Christ cast His light on all people that we may believe in Him and thus be led by Him to the Father.

On this Easter season, our response to Jesus’ Love is that the Lord has raised me up, I will proclaim

His praise and Glory for ever.

Alleluia , Alleluia Alleluia.

FINALLY THE 60TH BORN IS DELIVERED AFTER A HARD STRUGGLE ON THE ROAD!

The rain and the muddy roads could not deter the Catholic Diocese of Machakos from delivering its 60th Parish. A car got stuck but the owner could not give up because she had to go and help in mid-wiving the new child of the Diocese. This was also a very good opportunity for the photographer of the moment His Lordship Martin Kivuva Musonde to get a nice photo of the day to be put in his favorite magazine, Uw’o News letter!

It has taken ten years for this Parish to be completed after it was  curved from Kambu Parish and some stations of Kinyambu Parish. This Parish has  20 outstations. Kavatini Parish is more than 20 Kilometres from Mombasa -Nairobi Highway interior of Ngwata. The place experiences short rains hence making it a hardship zone. This was the time for the short rains and the roads were almost impassable. Despite the rains and the poor roads, it was a wonderful occasion that saw a huge turn up of Christians from the old parishes.

The day started well with several priests and sisters who had spent the previous night at Kambu Mission prior to the opening of the new Parish. After a warm welcome from the Christians, priests and the sisters Bishop Martin Kivuva Musonde consecrated the Altar and blessed the Tabernacle in the Parish Church. He then proceeded to the Fathers house,  he  blessed it and declared it officially opened. This was followed by the swearing in and canonically installing the first priests to work in the new parish of St. Ann Kavatini.

The first parish priest was announced as Rev. Fr. Josephat Kyambu and assistant priest as

Rev. Fr. Augustine Musyoki. During his homily, the Bishop called upon the Christians to support their priests and pray for them. He reminded the entire congregation that this year is The Year of  the Priests and that the work of the priest is to bring God to people and bring people to God. He continued to say that just like  Moses was called to deliver  the Israelites and his brother Aaron assisted him, the same way Fr. Kyambu has been called to deliver Christans of Kavatini from the bondage of sin assisted by Fr. Augustine Musyoki.

The Bishop could not forget to thank God for giving us a new Parish and rains.

He thanked all who contributed in building the Parish house especially Fr. Masawe, the Christians and all the people of good will.

The occasion was also graced by Hon. Professor Philip Kaloki the M. P for Kibwezi Constituency.

In his speech the new Fr. In-charge of St. Ann Parish – Kavatini thanked the Bishop for the appointment and promised to do his best.

AFRICAN SYNOD CONTINUED FROM ISSUE NO. 80 MARCH 2010

AN APPEAL TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

But it would be a tragedy if adjustments are made only in the interest of the rich and again at the expense of the poor. Many of the conflicts, wars and poverty of Africa derive mainly from these unjust structures. Humanity has a lot to gain, if it listens to the wise counsel of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI in Caritas in veritate. A new and just world order is not only possible but necessary for the good of all humanity. A change is called for with regard to the debts burden against poor nations, which literally kills children. Multinationals have to stop their criminal devastation of the environment in their greedy exploitation of natural resources. It is short-sighted policy to foment wars in order to make fast gains from chaos, at the cost of human lives and blood. Is there no one out there able and willing to stop all these crimes against humanity?

AFRICA, RISE UP!”

It is said that the cradle of the human species is somewhere in Africa. Our continent has a long history of great empires and illustrious civilizations. The future history of the continent is still to be written. God has blessed us with vast natural and human resources. In the international ratings of material and development indices, the countries of Africa are often at the bottom of the table. But this is no cause of despair. There have been gross acts of historic injustices, like slave trade and colonialism, whose negative consequence still lingers on. But these are no longer any excuse for not moving on. Much is actually happening.

We commend the efforts to liberate Africa from cultural alienation and political bondage. Now Africa must face the challenge of giving her children a dignified level of living conditions. On the political level, there is progress in continental integration, as the Organization for African Unity (OAU) developed into an African Union ( AU).

The AU and other regional groups, at times in collaboration with the UN, have undertaken initiatives for resolving conflicts and keeping peace in many crisis situations. On the economic front Africa has tried to fashion for herself a strategic framework for development called NEPAD, New Economic Partnership for African Development. She has even made provisions for an APRM( African. Peer Review Mechanism) to monitor and measure the compliance of nations.

The Synod commends these efforts, because these programmes clearly link economic emancipation of Africa with the installation fo good governance. Here, unfortunately, is the sticking point. For ost African nations the beautiful documents of NEPAD are still a dead letter. We look forward to a general improvement of governance in Africa.

To be continued in the next issue.

“YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH.”

This year in the Catholic Diocese of  Machakos, has been set aside to pray for the priests. The theme is “You are the Light of the World  You are the salt of the Earth” A special prayer is being said daily for them.

Following is the prayer just in case you did not get the February Issue or a copy of the prayer. “Lord Jesus, present in the Most Holy Sacrament, You wanted to continue Your presence among us through Your priests, grant that their words, may always be your words, their gestures, your gestures, so that their lives be a faithful reflection of your life.

May they be men who Speak to people about God, and of God to people. Let them not be afraid to serve, that they may serve the Church in the way she needs to be served.

Let them be witnesses of eternity in our time, men who move in history with your own steps and doing good to all.

Let them be faithful to their duties, zealous of their vocation and donation, bright mirrors of their identity and may they always live the joy of the gift they received. I ask this through the intercession of Your Holy Mother Mary: may she, who was present in Your life, be always present in the lives of your priests. Amen.”

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATED IN STYLE.

On 7th March about six hundred women gathered at Cathedral and Katoloni Parishes respectively to celebrate International Women’s Day.. Mrs. Angelina Kyonda, Chairlady Kathonzweni Parish facilitated the meeting at Cathedral. In her speech she highlighted that :- Women are the pillars of every home and they play a very important role in making peace. A truly joyful woman creates peace wherever she is and also makes her home stand firm. Therefore women should take their responsibility of creating and making peace seriously. About 200 women had their headscarf’s blessed that day. In Katoloni Parish, women had mass and discussion on the role of women in making peace.

The women realized that they play a key role in peace making and that once you are at peace you grow and develop in other areas like, being self reliant.

The women staff in the Development office were not left out on this auspicious occasion. On the 8th of March they organized a good celebration of Mass and breakfast together to celebrate women’s day and bid farewell to Sr. Shelja and Fr. Muoka as they moved to their new offices.

On the 9th -28th Mutituni women guardians also gathered to celebrate this great day. A presentation on peace making was given highlighting that there is no progress in the absence of peace. Although women suffer most when there is war and violence, the same women are key instruments in creating peace. The climax of this day was when Mrs. Angelina Kyonda was awarded a presidential award for serving the Nation well. This was done at her home District Kathonzweni on the 16th of March

A REFLECTION AS WE ENTER INTO THE EASTER SEASON.

ARE YOU BITTER OR BETTER

One day, two monks were walking through the countryside. As they walked, they spied an old woman sitting at the edge of a river. She was upset because there was no bridge, and she could not get across on her own. The first monk kindly offered, "We will carry you across, if you would like."  "Thank you," she said gratefully, accepting their help.  So the two men joined hands, lifted her between them and carried her across the river. When they got to the other side, they set her down, and she went on her way. After they had walked another mile or so, the second monk began to complain. "Look at my clothes," he said. "They are filthy from carrying that woman across the river. And my back still hurts from lifting her. I can feel it getting stiff."

The first monk just smiled and nodded his head. A few more miles up the road, the second monk griped again, "My back is hurting me so badly, and it is all because we had to carry that silly woman across the river! I cannot go any farther because of the pain." The first monk looked down at his partner, now lying on the ground, moaning. "Have you wondered why I am not complaining?" he asked. "Your back hurts because you are still carrying the woman. But I set her down five miles ago."

Eph. 4:31-32 “Let all bitterness,  wrath,  anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: Be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

That is what many of us are like in dealing with each other in our work places as well as our families.  We hold the pain of the past over our loved ones' heads like a club, or we remind them every once in a while, when we want to get the upper hand, of the burden we still carry because of something they did years ago.  Nothing will rob a Christian of spiritual victory more than a spirit of bitterness or resentment against someone who has wronged him. An unforgiving heart is more dangerous than a heart attack for a Christian. Blessing and power come from love and not offence. If you handle offence the right way, God will bring justice and will be our recompense.

Un- forgiveness really affects one person only and that is the one with the unforgiving heart.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Examine your heart today and if there be any trace of un forgiveness and bitterness, deal with it today lest you miss out on Gods blessings.

SUNDAY COMMENTARIES

Easter Sunday

Acts 10:34, 37-43; Col 3:1-4; John 20:1-9 16:1-7.

The resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a mystery which no one can fully comprehend. The Gospels do not describe how Jesus rose from the dead but they present us with a proclamation that Jesus is risen and that His close followers were eye witnesses to the empty tomb. In all the Gospels, women are the privileged as the first witnesses of the empty tomb. During His passion and death, Jesus was deserted practically by all.  Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him, and other disciples ran away.

Only a few women who witnessed his crucifixion and burial now visit the empty tomb. Mary Magdalene is a model of a courageous woman who reflects the undying zeal to follow the master. The resurrection opens a new reality. It fulfills the prediction of Jesus that after his death he will rise.

This is the cause of our joy. Though human beings desert the Lord, he still reveals himself to them and wants to restore them as he did with his disciples. When we run away from Him, he calls us back to repentance. Peter is bold enough to proclaim the mystery of Jesus and confirm His trust in the crucified. Saint Paul reminds us that our hope has a strong foundation-the resurrection.

2nd Sunday of Easter

Acts 5:12-16; Apoc. 1:9-13, 17-19; John 20:19-31

The God we worship is all present. He is very close to those who have committed their lives to Him. The revelation to John gives us a foretaste of the heavenly Jerusalem, our heavenly city. Jesus declares himself as the beginning and the end. He states that He was dead but now lives forever.

This reminds us of our baptism in which we believe that we died to sin and rose to righteousness. Our rapport with God was strengthened and is maintained by our closeness to His son who is our Brother and Lord.

The witness of the apostles and those who were baptized made many people come to seek for healing and exorcism. Our witness through life and words should create an impact on those who have not known Christ. Preaching by our lives is our fundamental occupation. The greatest gift the Risen Lord gives to His disciples is the Holy Spirit who is the true source of peace and reconciliation.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit helps the church to

realize her mission. The Spirit helps us to be sure of what we hope for and to be certain of what we do not see (Heb 11.1). Unlike Thomas, our faith is not based on what we have seen but it is on what we have heard and experienced.

3rd Sunday of Easter

Acts 5:27-32, 40-41; Apoc 5:11-14; John 21:1-19

The Gospel narrative sounds scandalous. Having read last Sunday’s Gospel which was meant to strengthen the disciples especially Thomas, here Peter and seven others dare go back to their old profession. None discourages Peter from going fishing; instead they say to him, “We will also go”.

It is during their fishing experience that the risen Lord visits them and wants to remind them of their vocation of being fishers of men. Peter needed it the more being the leader of the apostles. The question is, if he loves the Lord, why has he to go to his former job? Peter denied the Lord three times.

Here he affirms his love three times. We sometimes act like the disciples and Peter. How often do we betray the Lord? How often do we co-operate with our friends in going back to our old way of life? The Lord comes to us and seeks to restore us.

Like the disciples, we are frustrated when we want to do it our own way. We fail to recognize him but He acts and reminds us of His presence. Let us be open to His Spirit who reminds us of our responsibilities in building his Kingdom. Like Peter, it is in trusting acknowledgment of our weakness that we shall find our true strength.

4th Sunday of Easter

Acts 13: 14, 43-52; Apoc 7: 9, 14-17; John 10: 27-30

This Sunday is traditionally referred to as the Good Shepherd Sunday. The image of a Shepherd takes its divine root in the Jewish history when it is attributed to God. Shepherds in Israel were divided into two groups. Good Shepherds and bad ones (hired). In the Psalm 23, God is referred to as a Shepherd whose positive characteristics are enumerated and are worthy reflecting about.

The Kings, whom God entrusted to his people, would sometimes act like hired shepherds and torment God’s people (Eze. 34). In such cases God declares that He will be the Shepherd of his own flock (Ps 99). Jesus in the Gospel assures his followers that He is their shepherd and protects them. They have been entrusted to Him by His Father. He has paid the cost of ownership with His blood. We did not merit becoming God’s people in Baptism but Jesus paid the ransom. Our response should be faithful witness to the Words of our Shepherd whom we witness. Pastors of God’s flock and the leaders of the people are challenged to play the part of Shepherd. All Christians participate in the ministry by helping one another realize the goal.

By Fr. Francis Maundu.
