SUNDAY COMMENTARIES - JULY

13th Sunday

Wis:1:13-15; 2:23-24; Ps: 29:2, 4-4,11-13; 2Cor. 8;7-9.13-15, Gospel: Mk 5: 21 – 43

Today’s gospel give a double vivid, miracle story and the similarities depend on the unwavering faith of Jairus and the woman who have come to realize that all the money in the world cannot secure life, only Jesus has the power to raise us from the dead.  Today he wants to raise us from our spiritual death, so that we will be ready to enter everlasting life when he comes again.  In the 1st reading we see that it was the devils envy that brought death into the world. Psalm 29 gives thanks for rescuing us from mortal danger.  Paul in the 2nd reading requests the Greeks to assist the poor because “in giving relief to others” we imitate Christ generosity by balancing our surplus against those in need as our Bishop requests, “I am your DONOR you are my DONOR.”

14th Sunday

Ez: 2:2-5. Ps 122; 2Cor.12: 7-10, Mk: 6:1-6

“A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house,”   these words of Jesus from today’s gospel apply to all three readings.   Ezekiel is warned in a vision that he will meet with resistance from the rebellious house of Israel, his own people to whom he is sent.  Paul’s appeal to his beloved Corinthians who betrayed him by transferring their allegiance to the high powered “super apostles” who cheated them with their “eloquent speeches”.  In the gospel Jesus is rejected by the people of Nazareth, his native place.  These three experiences challenge us to ask ourselves, 1. Do we obstinate of heart, refuse to hear the prophet’s words? 2. Are we like the Corinthians impressed by outward show; but impervious to the grace that comes in weakness.  3. Are we so lacking in faith that Jesus cannot act powerfully among us

15th Sunday

An: 7:12-15, Ps: 84: 9-14, Ep: 1:13-14, Mk: 6:7-13

Ephesians opens with an extravagant prayer of thanks and blessings, but the greatest gift by far is God’s choice of us in Christ.  Every spiritual blessing is summed up in this one holiness, adoption as God’s children, redemption, forgiveness of sins, wisdom and knowledge of the mystery of God’s plan and purpose.  As a result of this gift, our whole lives must be a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.  If praise is the first response to the gift of God, then proclamation follows immediately. Jesus sends the TWELVE to preach repentance around Nazareth.  They are authorized to proclaim in word and deed, the gift of God revealed in Jesus.  But Jesus warns them from his own experience and that of others, that they must be prepared to meet with rejection by shaking the dust from their feet, symbolically rejecting those who reject God’s blessing.

16th Sunday

Jer: 23:1-6, Ps: 22 Eph: 2:13-18, Mk: 6:30-34

The 1st and 2nd readings today give a number of contrasting images.  Jeremiah contrasts false leaders with that righteous shoot who will govern wisely; bad shepherds with the good shepherd who is God, the present time of distress with the coming days of salvation.  His message is a word of hope for exiled Israel.  Ephesians invites the gentile Christians to contrast their previous status with their present life in Christ.

They who were once far off have been drawn near.  The dividing wall that separated Jew and Gentile has been replaced by one new humanity with ONE route of access to our father.  Both readings proclaim God’s intention to gather the sheep so that there will be one flock, one shepherd.  That is Jesus Mission in today’s Gospel.  The sight of the vast crowd like sheep without a shepherd fills him with compassion.  “And he began to teach them”.

17th Sunday

2KGS: 4:42-44 Ps 144: 10-11, 15-18.

Ep: 4:1-6; Gos: Jn: 6:1-15

John’s version of the multiplication of the loaves has points of contrast with Elisha’s miracle namely, the skepticisms of the apostles and the little boy with the five barley loaves.  This episode, set on a mountain at Passover time, reminds us too of Moses who gave his people bread from heaven.  Jesus question, where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” echoes the question of Moses, “Where can I get meat to give these people?” (Numbers 11:13). As manna was given by God to test the people, (Ex, 16:4) so does Jesus test Philip; and when all had had their fill, Jesus instructed the disciples to gather the fragments, as Moses taught Israel to gather manna each day.  The Gospels for the next three Sundays are going to talk of our Lord as the Bread of life.  The Psalm is hymn of praise to God who provides food for all our needs.

BISHOP´S VISIT TO BARCELONA - (11/5/06.) - SPAIN

We owe a debt of gratitude to His Lordship for the efforts he made to pay us a pastoral visit here in Spain for the first time. Arriving at the opportune moment, the Bishop had a brief and hasty encounter with the contemplative & active communities of Barcelona. For us Kenyan sisters, it was a very special and precious occasion, though unexpected. For this our sincere gratitude remains in our hearts. Because of this, our meeting with His Lordship was an occasion of great joy and deep emotion.

The Bishop, shared with us, Superiors and Sisters and we asked many questions to which the Bishop responded without diverging from the reality. Due to some inconveniences and abuse a lot of discord was caused affecting the entire Catholic Church, and all who were involved should accept a share of responsibility concerning this matter. Speaking honestly the Bishop persuaded the Superiors to follow the right channel and criteria by enquiring step by step adequate information of the background of each candidate. This would help to acquire better solutions to some of the problems which are likely to come-up. The Bishop stressed the importance of treating each candidate as an individual and not as a group of young people with a mistaken idea of Religious life.

These young people need a vision for their future lives.  The Bishop felt this was the most efficient and reliable approach at the present moment under the prevailing circumstances. Marked on the faces of our Mothers was a clear sign of satisfaction after the short dialogue with the Bishop and our participation too.

On the other hand the Bishop urged us as young sisters to embrace our religious vocations with responsibility, determination, transparency and to exclude any kind of vested interests. Stressing that prayer is the main defence in life and that without it we are not capable of meeting the problems and shortcomings of Religious life today.

The Bishop encouraged us to feel free to serve the Lord with all our hearts because there is no other full time apostolate which preaches the truth. Giving a lot of emphasis on spiritual growth and maturity which are the indispensable elements in this journey of Faith. His Lordship addressed us with total concern, kindness and simplicity expressing his joy and responsibility for us.

We would like to say in conclusion that we are glad to have had this blessed opportunity to share our spiritual needs with His Lordship. This proved how much the shepherd loves His sheep.  We pray that finally God will protect His Lordship always. Thank you your Lordship Rt. Rev. Martin Kivuva Musonde.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY – FR. MAKEWA HIGH SCHOOL

Fr. Makewa High School has done a lot in environmental management, utilization, preservation and sustainability.  Under the NEMA school based Programmes, it was voted the best in Machakos district for year 2005/2006.  The school also featured in similar environmental issues in the Daily Telegram of U.K in April 2006.  There are over twenty thousand plant species within the school compound and another twenty two thousand assorted vegetable seedlings.  The vegetable field has an excellent blending of the best local and exotic plants.

These include local sesbania, exotic sesbania, Gliricidia sepium, Calliandra, crotalavia among others.  They add useful nutrients to soil, reduce soil erosion, provide animal fodder for the school goat/sheep project, and provide nectar for honey production.  Fruit trees include pawpaws, bananas, mangoes, tomato tree and custard apple.

Waste water from the school kitchen and bathrooms is recycled using kitchen wood ash for use in watering the tree seedlings, sweet and African potatoes, napier grass and vegetable/tree nurseries. Students are highly involved in all the above as well as parents with high fees balances.  The school has surface run-off harvesting technologies of water pans.  So far, the current water capacity is over 250,000 litres of water. Once the school YCDF sponsored borehole is in place, the school shall be self sufficient in most of the basic food provision.

We appreciate the special support from His Lordship Bishop Martin Kivuva, Fr in charge Rev. Fr. Paul Munguti, Honorable Charles Kilonzo, MP Yatta constituency, Rev. Fr. John Makewa, MCDA under the BOG chairman Mr. Raphael Masika, the B.O.G for approving the projects, PTA, parents, staff, students, community, NEMA and all stakeholders within and without. All the above is just a beginning.  The learning atmosphere is conducive and we expect to achieve a high academic standard especially with the current form four class.

BISHOP’S VISIT TO MBIUNI PARISH - 9TH, 10TH & 11TH JUNE

Mbiuni Catholic Mission was started in 1977, the first parish priest being Fr. Michael Cunniffe, belonging to the congregation of Holy Ghost. It was in 1983, Fr. Jose Kallely belonging to CMI congregation (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate0 took the charge of Mbiuni Mission.  Four years back, the Kabaa zone was separated from Mbiuni Parish and became an autonomous Parish.  At present we have 2000 Catholics in Mbiuni. Fr. Jose Kallely is assisted by two CMI priests, namely Fr. Jose Vadakinedath and Fr. Biju Chathely.  Within this long span of time, Fr. Kallely has succeeded in either building or renovating the church with the support of the people.

The educational department of this area are satisfied to a certain extent by the establishment of a polytechnic at Kabaa, Carmel Secondary and St. Joseph’s Primary School in Mbiuni and St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Katheka.  Franciscan Clarist Sisters help us in our mission in the field of education, social and pastoral work in four zones namely, Mbiuni, Miseleni, Makiliva and  Kathama have 14 outstations altogether.  Pastoral visit of a Bishop to his churches is a policy of Catholic Church to encourage the priests and faithful to grow in Christian faith and values. Our Bishop Martin Kivuva by his presence graced the parish, priests and the faithful.

The spontaneity of his expressions to convey the Christian message was really appealing.  The question he raised remain challenges to all of us.  Bishop motivated us to take up corrective measures against social injustice, political bureaucracy and immorality.  On 9th June, Our Bishop reached Mbiuni by 10.00a.m.  The first programme was the blessing of presbytery at Miseleni.  Then he blessed the newly built church at Mithini followed by concelebrated mass, integrated with the rite of confirmation.  On 10th June, he started his mission by saying a Mass for the 1200 students coming from Carmel Secondary Girls, ST. Joseph’s Primary and Mbiuni Secondary School.  Second programme of the day was the visit to St.  Mary’s Rehabilitation centre for physically and mentally disabled.

From there he proceeded to Makaliva zone where he celebrated mass and the sacrament of confirmation. Bishop visited also F.C.C convent and had supper with the sisters. On 11th June, the final day, Bishop had a colorful reception to the Mbiuni Parish church from the faithful with the accompaniment of Carmel school Band, followed by concelebrated liturgy together with sacrament of confirmation.  We are happy to say that 1103 people received the sacrament of confirmation from the four zones.  We are thankful to the church council and catechists who had worked hard to make this pastoral visit fruitful and prayerful one with colorful events.  The Pastoral visit and dynamic approach of His Excellency our Bishop was encouraging.

Thank you Bishop for all you have been to us.  Karibu tena.

Asst. Parish Priest, Mbiuni

BR. KIZITO MULI NGAO R.I.P - THE FINAL JOURNEY

Brother Kizito, a brave warrior of Jesus Christ, passed away on 10th June 2006 at Bishop Kioko’s Hospital.  Thanks to priests, doctors and people of good will who assisted him.  The burial ceremony was presided over by our own shepherd Bishop Martin Kivuva Musonde (Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Machakos).  He deeply expressed his care, concern and fatherly love to the entire congregation.  In his homily he emphasized on unity and care.  He showed this by giving an analogy of “Nditiku” and “Nzou”.  These two belong to different groups of animal kingdom the lower and the higher.  There is always a gathering when an ant dies a sign of mourning.  The same applies to elephants, who try to bury their dead

From the two classes of animals, human beings learn how we should be united from the beginning to the last stage of our life span.  We are sorrowful when one of us dies or is knocked down by a car.  We are even shocked by the news of death of our relatives or other people.  Brother Kizito is a lesson to many for he was simple and humble.  Just as different insects follow different stages of life, so also human beings do.  Butterflies undergo the stages commenced in egg-larva, pupa and ends in adult.  We undergo earthly stages following Christ foot steps of suffering, death and resurrection, the final stage when we shall see God as he is. Eternal rest grant to him o Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him, May he rest in Peace Amen.
